FASD Research Study

The Fetal Alcohol and Drug Unit at the University of Washington is doing a study to better understand the health issues faced by adults with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). 

We are looking for adults with a confirmed diagnosis of FASD who meet the following criteria

  • Age 37-58
  • Identify as Black/African American, White, or American Indian/Alaskan Native
    (including biracial or multiracial individuals)  
  • Able to provide documentation of their FASD diagnosis OR permit our research team to collect medical records related to their FASD diagnosis
  • Able to come to the University of Washington to participate in one study visit lasting up to 4 hours 

What to expect:

  • A researcher will ask you a few short screening questions to determine if you are eligible to participate in the study.  
  • You will provide a fasting (10-12 hours) blood sample, a urine sample, and two saliva samples (morning and evening). Saliva collection kits will be mailed for collection at home and brought into the study site. 
  • You will complete nine surveys asking questions about your physical health, mental health, life events that may have caused stress, history of substance use, and basic information about your race, gender and ethnicity. Some surveys can be completed over the phone. 
  • Surveys include potentially sensitive questions about traumatic events, and childhood physical and sexual abuse. 
  • You will complete two tests using a laptop looking at problem solving, planning, memory and attention. 
  • 3D facial photographs will be taken. 
  • There is an optional take-home stool sample kit. Those who return this sample will receive an additional $25 Amazon gift card.  
  • Total time for all surveys and tests is between three and a half and four hours. 
  • People who participate will be paid $150 for their time and effort. 
  • All information will be stored in a confidential manner.
