The Fetal Alcohol and Drug Unit at the University of Washington is doing a study to learn what may lead to good health or health problems in adults based on their history of prenatal alcohol exposure.

We are looking for ACTIVE MIDDLE AGED and OLDER ADULTS to be in the study who meet the following criteria

  • People of all genders aged 35-56 years or 65 years or older
  • People who identify their race as Black/African American, White, American Indian/Alaskan Native, and/or individuals of more than one race  
  • People who are reasonably certain that their birth mother DID NOT drink alcohol very much while pregnant with them
  • People who are able to come to the University of Washington to participate in one study visit lasting up to 4 hours

What to expect:

  • A researcher will ask you a few short screening questions to determine if you are eligible to participate in the study. 
  • A fasting blood (10-12 hours), urine samples and two saliva samples (morning and evening). Saliva collection kits will be mailed for collection at home and brought in to the study site.
  • Nine surveys asking questions about your physical health, mental health, life events that may have caused stress, history of substance use and basic information about your race, gender and ethnicity. Some surveys can be completed over the phone.
  • Surveys include potentially sensitive questions about traumatic events, and childhood physical and sexual abuse.
  • Two tests using a laptop looking at problem solving, planning, memory and attention.
  • Have 3D facial photographs taken.
  • Total time for all surveys and tests is between three and a half and four hours.
  • People who participate will be paid $150 to thank them for their time and effort.
  • All information will be stored in a confidential manner.
